The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those stud
ents who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its inception.
Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS and NJHS. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

The Archbishop Spalding chapter of the NHS formally recognizes those students who not only excel in the classroom, but are also role models and active participants in the Spalding community and beyond.
Membership SelectionStudents are selected for membership in the National Honor Society by a Faculty Council based on their demonstrated outstanding performance in all four criteria of scholarship, leadership, service and character.
To qualify for consideration by this faculty council, a student must:
- be a Junior or Senior
- have a cumulative weighted GPA of 3.500
- have attended ASHS for at least one semester prior to the induction date
- have completed measurable service to school and/or community (minimum of 20 hours)
- have demonstrated involvement and leadership in school activities. (Job related leadership does not qualify.)
- have his or her disciplinary record thoroughly reviewed by the Faculty Council
Member ObligationsOnce a student is selected for membership in NHS, his or her scholarship and service continues. The primary duty of the Spalding chapter of the NHS is the RAP program. RAP (Reading and Academic Preparation) sessions are held on Mondays and Thursdays after school in room 116. At RAP sessions, NHS students offer tutoring in all subjects, free of charge, to any student who asks for help. In addition, NHS sponsors fundraisers throughout the year, the proceeds of which are donated to a charity of the members' choice. NHS members also serve as student ambassadors at events such as Open House, Back to School Night, and the Alumni Memorial Mass and Breakfast.
RAP InfoAll members are required to complete two RAP sessions per year. If, for whatever reason, you are unable to fulfill your requirements (all spots were taken, school was canceled on one or both of your days, you were out sick on your day, etc.) all you need to do is e-mail Mrs. Clack. There are MANY students here who need tutoring on days and times other than during our normal RAP sessions.
